Chapter 4: Birthday!

I laughed as I ran around in the backyard with Jack chasing me. The warm spring breeze blew through my hair as I tried to out run Jack. I was starting too tired but Jack seemed like all the running had not even fazed him, he still kept going at the same pace while I had slowed down. I slowed down enough for Jack to grab me, raising me in the air and spinning around.

Laughing I yelled in an excited voice, “Again! Lift me higher!”

Jack laughed and complied with my demand. He raised me up as high as he could reach and started to run around the backyard. I held my arms out to pretend like I was flying. I squealed with excitement and looked up at the sky as the air blew through my hair. After a few minutes Jack lowered me to the ground and set me down. I looked up at him with an excited grin.

“That was soooo much fun Jackie!” I laughed and grabbed his hand “It must be fun being so tall.”

Jack squeezed my hand and laughed, “It comes in handy sometimes kiddo.” I let go of his hand and sat down on the ground.

I laid back on the ground and looked up and Jack with a soft smile. He looked down at me and sat down beside me. I looked away from Jack and up to the sky. I felt Jack lay down next to me. We both watched the clouds in a peaceful silence all day. A question crossed my mind and my curiosity got the better of me.

I turned my head towards Jack and said, “Hey Jackie? Can I ask you something?” Jack turned to look at me.

Jack smiled and said in a cheery voice, “Of course! You can ask me anything kiddo.” I smiled at Jack and nodded.

“I never told you I am sick. How did you know about it?” I asked. I saw Jack’s expression turn sad for a second before he looked cheery again.

Jack said in a cheery voice, “What kind of best friend would I be if I didn’t know everything about you?” With a smirk Jack continued, “I am magical after all!”

I laughed and looked back at the sky, “Yea I guess that’s it.” I did not see the sad expression on Jack’s face return as he looked back up at the sky.

~Time Skip 3 Months~

“Jack! Jack!” I half yelled in excitement as I ran into my room. Jack looked at me with a cheery face and laughed.
“What’s up kiddo?” Jack asked in an amused tone. I gave him a big grin and ran over to him.

Looking up at Jack I asked in excitement, “Guess what tomorrow is!” Jack put his hand under his chin and hummed as he seemed to be thinking.

“Hmmm it’s too early for Christmas or any major holiday. Could it be an event in the town?” Jack asked in a playful tone. I shook my head at him. “Hmmm could it be a visiting family member?” Jack asked. I shook my head again and laughed. “Could it be….” Jack said as he quickly put his hands on my shoulders “Your birthday?” Jack in a cheery voice.

I nodded my head and laughed, “Yes it is! I will be turning ten tomorrow!” Jack pulled me into a hug.

I heard him do a fake gasp and say in a mocking tone, “Gosh kiddo you are getting to be so old! Next thing you know, you will need a walking cane!” I laughed hard at that and playfully hit his arm.

I yawned at looked at the clock, it was 8pm. “I’m going to get ready for bed” I said as I got my pajamas and headed to the bathroom.

Once in the bathroom I quickly changed into my pajamas and brushed my teeth. I looked at myself in the mirror. I had become a little paler and the dark circles under my eyes were more noticeable. I shrugged it off not thinking of it. I walked back into my bedroom to see Jack already in bed.

I went over to the bed and got in. Jack was already snoring softly beside me. ‘Wow he must have been really tired’ I thought as I looked over at him. I turned away from him and turned the lamp off. I drifted into a peaceful sleep with happy thoughts of tomorrow.

The next morning I woke up early with excitement. I stretched in bed and sat up. I looked over at Jack who was still asleep. The smell of cooking hit my nose ‘Mommy must be cooking breakfast’ I thought with excitement. I left Jack so he could sleep more while I went to the kitchen.

I walked into the kitchen and saw Mommy and Daddy already up. Mommy was at the stove cooking. “Morning Mommy! Morning Daddy!” I said in an excited voice.

Daddy looked at up from his paper with a smile and said. “Morning birthday girl, do you feel any older?” I laughed and shook my head.

I took a seat at the table just as Mommy put my plate in front of me. “Happy birthday Sweetheart” Mommy said in a loving voice. I smiled at her as I began to eat.

Daddy looked up from his plate and said, “Your grandparents are coming over this evening to celebrate with us.” I squealed in excitement.

“Yay! I love when Grammy and Grampy come over!” I said in an excited voice.

I finished breakfast and went to my room while Mommy and Daddy got the house ready for my party. I went into my room to see Jack still sleeping in bed. I looked over at the clock it was 10:32am. ‘Is he planning on being lazy all day?’ I thought with amusement. I ran over to the side of the bed Jack was sleeping on and looked at him.

I pushed on him and said in a whiney tone, “Jaaaaack stop being lazy and get uuuup!” Jack grunted in response. “Up! Up! Up!” I pushed on him again.

Jack opened one eye and looked at me before quickly closing it again and rolling over so his back was facing me. I pouted and poked him. I heard him chuckle softly and pretend to snore. I giggled knowing that Jack was playing with me. I sat on the bed and leaned over him to try and see his face, which was hidden in the blankets; I only saw his wild red hair. Leaning over Jack I let out a startled squeal as he quickly turned to face me and grabbed me in a hug before pulling me over him and into a laying position.

“Got you~” Jack said in a playful voice that was still groggy from sleep. I giggled at Jack and moved his messy red hair out of his face so I could look him in the eyes. Jack hugged me and said in a warm voice, “Happy birthday Lucy!” I hugged Jack in return and he gave me a light kiss on the forehead before sitting up and getting off the bed.

I blushed from the kiss and asked Jack in a shy voice, “So what are we going to do today?” Jack looked at me with an excited look.

“Anything you want birthday girl~” Jack said in a sing-song voice. I giggled and walked over to him.

“Well we have some time to play until my grandparents come over for the party. Let’s draw pictures again!” I said with excitement. Jack laughed and snapped his fingers. Drawing supplies appeared on the floor; I laughed and grabbed Jack’s hand and dragged him over to it.

Jack and I played all morning and part of the afternoon making pictures fight each other again. Jack drew an army of candy dressed up like Spartans this time and I drew archer cats. The whole floor got covered in candy wrappers and fur as the drawing fought each other to the death. Jack waved his hand after the fight and the floor became clean again.

I heard the doorbell ring alerting me that my grandparents had arrived. I looked over at Jack and he smiled and nodded. I smiled and ran over to him and hugged him before running out of the room. As I entered the living room, I saw my grandparents carrying gifts and a homemade cake. I ran over to them and hugged them tightly.
My grandmother laughed and said in a cheery tone, “My look how much you have grown! You’re becoming quite a pretty young lady.” I smiled at her and hugged her tightly.

“Thank you Grammy!” I giggled before turning to Grampy and giving him a hug.

Grampy chuckled and said with his old raspy voice, “Seems like only yesterday I was a young whipper-snapper like you! Happy birthday Darling.” I smiled and gave him a kiss.

The party consisted of playing board games with the family and watching a few movies. When it was present time, we gathered in the living room so I could open my gifts. Grammy got me some play jewelry and stuffed toys. Grampy got me some coloring supplies and new clothes. Last but not least, my parents bought me some new movies and a new blanket for my bed. I was excited by all the new gifts and I hugged everyone in thanks.

“Alright I know everyone is ready for the main event of the party!” I heard Daddy announce as he came into the living room carrying the cake. I squealed in excitement at the sight of cake.

“Daddy can I have an extra big piece of cake cut into two pieces?” I asked in an excited voice. He looked at me and smiled. Daddy cut a big slice of cake and carefully cut down the middle of it. “Yay! Thank you! Can I go eat in my room so I can play with my new toys?” I asked in a hopeful voice.

“Of course Dear, just bring your plate out when you’re done and don’t make a mess” Mommy said in a loving tone.

I smiled and went into the kitchen with my plate. While in the kitchen I carefully opened the silverware drawer and pulled out another fork. I put the spare fork in my pocket and went into my bedroom. When I opened the door I saw Jack sitting on the bed. Jack looked up and smiled at me. I walked over to him with the plate of cake.

I offered the plate to him and said in the cutest voice that I could muster, “Jaaaack this piece of cake is too big for me to eat alone~” Jack looked at me and his face brightened at that.

Jack gave me a smirk and said in an amused tone, “Well it looks like it’s been conveniently cut in two pieces as well. Hmmm I wonder why” he raised an eyebrow at me while he said that.

I giggled and pulled the other fork out of my pocket and said, “I just so happen to have two forks as well! So want to help me with this cake?” I handed the other fork to Jack which he gratefully accepted.

Jack looked back at me and said, “Well it does look like a two person job!” I laughed at that and we started to eat the cake.

After we finished eating I went to the kitchen to put the plate and forks in the sink. I went back to my room to grab my pajamas and get ready for bed. When I came back into the room I saw Jack was lying on the bed. I smiled and went over to join him.

I turned to face Jack and said in a soft voice, “I had fun today thanks Jackie.” He turned to look at me and smiled.

“Of course kiddo, I love seeing you laugh and smile” said Jack in a warm voice.

I turned away from Jack and yawned. I got comfy and turned the lamp off. Jack shuffle next to me as he got in a comfy position and we both drifted off to sleep. I had happy thoughts about today before finally falling into a deep sleep.
